Geographical Investigation Flashcards
Describe Systematic Sampling
- Determine the interval between the population to be interviewed
- Choose 1 person randomly to be interviewed first
- Interview the next person based on the interval
What advantages does systematic sampling have over random sampling? Why?
Systematic sampling is easier as random sampling needs to get a list of the population and number them, making it time-consuming and difficult.
What is reliability of results?
How representative the results are (are they biased?)
Consistency (can the same set of results be reproduced if the survey is carried out again?)
Describe Random Sampling
- Know population size
- Determine sample size
- Allocate a number to each of the population
- Use a number generator to generate the numbers to be surveyed
- Construct the survey
What factors could affect reliability?
Sample size, only interviewing a specific part of the population (bias)
What are the 3 ways we can represent data?
Bar graphs, pie charts, tables
What is GI?
It is a form of geographical inquiry where students are required to investigate a geographical issue and demonstrate their learning by completing an end product.
What is field work?
Stage 1: pre-field work
Identification of problem as a result of direct observation or from class work
Formulation of a hypothesis or Research Question as a result of reading, discussion, thinking.
Stage 2: field work
Field activities involving data collection and recording.
Stage 3: post-field work
Data analysis; processing information
Accept or Reject hypothesis ; address RQ Reflection
