Geographical Informatiin Systems Flashcards
Spatial Resolution
Detail of location that map shows
GIS
Geographical Information Systems
Computer based geographic tool. Many uses.
Collects data from satellite, remote sensing, GPS, orthophoto maps, scanned maps, research.
Locational data
Tells where data is using coordinates
Attributes
Tells about qualities and characteristics of data
Passive Remote Sensing
Collect data that constantly radiates. Orbits Earth. Returns data every few days.
Active Remote Sensing
Sends own radiation to Earth. Radiation sent back. Data obtained any time. Data transmitted to stations to produce visuals
Spatial Object
Any feature recorded as point/line/area
Points
Geographical area too small to be line/area
Line
Series of coordinates representing one-dimensional feature
Area
Feature with set lines as boundary. Called a polygon
Vector
Coordinate based. Uses points, lines, areas. Can be straight/curved
Raster
Cell based. Graphics shown as rows and columns of pixels. Each cell contains value and location coordinates.
