a group of many islands
archipelago
part of an ocean or lake extending into the land that is usually smaller than a gulf
bay
human-made waterway dug across land for transportation or irrigation
canal
a deep, narrow valley with steep sides (usually caused by erosion)
canyon
the part of the land near the sea (shore)
coast
a dry region that may be sandy and without trees
desert
a large area covered mostly with trees (and undergrowth)
forest
a huge mass of ice that moves slowly down a mountain or over land
glacier
part of an ocean extending into land that is usually larger than a bay
gulf
a naturally raised area of land, not as high or craggy as a mountain
hill
an area of land completely surrounded by water
island
a narrow strip of land with water on both sides that connects two larger areas of land
isthmus
a large body of water surrounded by land
lake
an isolated flat-topped hill with steep sides (found in landscapes with horizontal strata)
mesa
a landform with high elevation and a pointed or rounded top; higher than a hill
mountain
a row of connected mountains
mountain range
the part of a river where its waters flow into another body of water
mouth
land surrounded by water on all sides but one
peninsula
a broad and flat or gently rolling area usually low in elevation
plain
a flat, elevated landform that rises sharply above surrounding area on at least one side
plateau
a large stream of water that flows from a source in higher elevations to another body of water
river
a narrow waterway connecting two large bodies of water
strait
a stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river
tributary
low land between hills or mountains
valley
an opening in the earth’s surface through which steam, ash, and lava are forced out
volcano
