What were the challenges that Africans had to face after their independence?
- Many government leaders had spent years fighting for independence yet had no experience running a country.
- Many people did not have the education to run a country.
- After they granted their colonies independence, the Europeans did not help with the transition
- Their countries were not stable
- Many governments were taken over by military with no elections + few rights
- Many government leaders were often corrupt, spending money on illegal bank accounts, families, palaces, military equipment, etc.

A movement that unified Africans and aimed to eliminate colonial rule. It began in the 20th century and its slogan was “Africans for Africans”
How did World War II contribute to Africans gaining independence?
- The Africans had helped the Europeans fight against the Axis powers
- In return, the Africans demanded independence.
After WWII why were the Europeans willing to give up their colonies?
- Their government and their economies were in ruins.
- They could no longer manage to maintain their overseas communities
- They felt guilty and looked hypocritical
