Geo Vocabulary (unit 1) Flashcards
What is Continental drift
It was a early theory proposed by wagner that suggested there were plates below earth’s surface that would move explaining many natural disasters of the time but wagner couldn’t find evidence on why they move but now we have that evidence and we believe that his theory is true
Plate tectonics:
These are 7 plates below earth’s surface in earth’s mantle these plates over time create many landforms known today
Latitude
How far you are from the equator can change the the sunlight the region has
Ocean currents
2 types oceans warm and cold this can change the climate in an area
Elevation
higher you are colder and drier it will be(less oxygen)
Relief
Mountain barriers create relief precipitation. As moist air rises up the windward slope of a mountain range, it expands and cools.
Near water
areas located in the interior of large land masses, far from oceans, and far
from large lakes, have a continental climate. Lakes can moderate temperature and
make it feel warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.
Erosion
Wearing away from the earth’s surface. Followed by the movement to other locations of materials that have worn away.
Canadian shield
Large area of Precambrian rock that forms in the core of Canada.
Weathering
Water freezes expanding concrete making pot holes so you can think of weathering short term and erosion long term.
