Orang Asli and Australian Aboriginals
Origin/ who are the Orang Asli?
The original people of Peninsular Malaysia, (Western Malaysia) living there for over 5,000 years,
Origin/ who are the Australian Aboriginals? How many years have they lived there?
They too are they original people of Australia, living there for more than 65,000 years.
How they are similar or different in origins/ who are they?
Both groups are the first people to live in their lands, but Aboriginal Australians have been living in Australia longer than the Orang Asli have been living in Malaysia
What is the population of the Orang Asli?
Around 178,000 Orang Asli (0.5% of Malaysia’s population).
What is Australian Aboriginals population?
About 800,000 Aboriginal Australians (3.3% of Australia’s population).
How are they similar of different in population?
There are more Aboriginal people in Australia then than Orang Asli in Malaysia.
What tribes and groups are there in the Orang Asli?
18 different groups such as Temiar and Senoi, each with their own languages and customs.
What are the different tribes and groups in the Australian Aboriginals?
Over 500 groups, like Arrernte and Yolngu, each with unique languages and traditions
How are they similar or different when it comes to tribes and groups?
Both groups are very diverse, with many tribes that have their own unique ways of life.
What languages do the Orang Asli speak?
Mostly speak Austroasiatic languages or Malay.
What languages do the Australian Aboriginals speak?
Many original languages, though most speak English now.
How are they similar or different in languages?
Both groups are losing some of their traditional languages, but Aboriginal Australians have more languages overall.
What beliefs do the Orang Asli have?
Traditionally believe in spirits in nature, with some now following Islam or Christianity.
What beliefs do the Australian Aboriginals have?
Originally believed in Dreamtime stories; some now follow Christianity or other religions.
How are they similar or different in beliefs?
Both have a strong spiritual connection to nature, but Dreamtime stories are especially important to Aboriginal Australians.
What is the Orang Asli’s connection to land?
The Orang Asli believed that their land is central to the cultural practices and has religious significance to their land. The land is a legacy that they can inherit, and it determines who they can talk to (it determines their social interactions and is a part of their identity).
What is Australian Aboriginals connection to land
For Australian Aboriginals they believe that the land is a living thing and that their ancestors spirits created the land and continue to care for it. They have developed a deep understanding of the land including how to use it to their everyday lives. Also they have rituals for building shelters and killing animals for foods to make sure that they can keep the balance. They believe that the have a responsibility to manage and protect the land including using fire to encourage new growth. There also are sacred sites that were special to the groups
What was the impact of the colonization to the Orang Asli?
Lost much of their land when the British colonized Malaysia.
What was the impact of the colonization to the Australian Aboriginals?
Lost land and suffered greatly under British colonization, including being moved off their land.
How are they similar or different when they had the impact of colonization?
Both were affected by colonization, but Aboriginal Australians experienced more direct effects for a longer time.
What land rights do the Orang Asli have?
Some land rights, but not enough to stop activities like logging (cutting down forests).
