Geo/resources Flashcards
Resource
Things that humans use to create goods and services
Natural resource
Any resource that comes from the earth (Trees, Oil, Metals)
Critical Renewable
Resources that can replenish themselves if maintained properly
Non-critical renewable
A renewable resource that won’t run out no matter what (sun, wind)
Non-renewable
A resource that has a finite supply, once this resource is gone, it is gone forever. (coal, oil, nickel)
Eco-region
The primary level of industry
The collection of resources from the earth (Forestry, Fishing, Mining)
The secondary level of industry
Taking the collected resources and turning them into a product
The tertiary level of industry
Selling the products that were created (cashier)
The quaternary level of industry
Information based and the dispersal of knowledge (scientists)
Define Ecological footprint
A measure of how many resources it takes to support you for one year. (measured in hectares)
Define earth overshoot day
The date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what the earth can regenerate in that year.
Define biocapacity
The ecosystem’s capacity to produce the biological materials used by people and to absorb waste material generated by humans under current management schemes and extraction technologies.
Define ecological deficit
When a country or the world does not have enough ecological resources to cover the population’s footprint
What is climate change?
The natural and slowly occurring change in climate, warmer or colder
