What is an industry?
All economic activities involved in producing material goods.
What does industrialization mean?
Process of making things by machine (instead of by hand) in a factory or office.
What does “emerging country” mean?
Developing country becoming developed.
What does “Relocation” mean?
The action of moving to a new place and establishing one’s home or business there.
What does “Globalization” mean?
When businesses develop international influence or start operating on an international scale.
What is an industrialized country?
Developed country…. Basically.
What is an industrial region?
Territory or region with a high concentration of companies that depend on industry.
(Industry means: all economic activities Involved in producing material goods)
How do industries help a region’s economic development?
Industry creates jobs and produces goods that are either sold or are used to manufacture other goods.
Name the three sectors of economic activity and give an example of each.
The primary sector includes all activities involved using natural resources, Such as agriculture, fishing and mining. The secondary sector refers to industrial activities that convert raw materials into goods ready for consumption. This includes Agri-food, Consumer goods (textile and cars), Construction and energy production industries. The tertiary sector includes all service related activities such as transportation, tourism, trade, telecommunications, health and education.
List 3 factors that attract businesses and industries to certain regions.
- Presence of natural resources
- nearby energy source
- existing transportation networks (these allow raw materials and produced goods to be easily transported either on land or water)
What are 2 natural resources found in the Great Lakes region?
Large reserve of fresh water in the world & fertile soil, dense forests & mineral deposits.
What are 2 main energy sources found in the Great Lakes region?
Coal and many hydroelectric dams in Canada.
Which industry led to industrialization of the Great Lakes region in the late 19th century and beginning of the 20th century?
Mining (ores)
NOT ON TEST…. but anyways… the availability of raw materials as well as the use of lakes for transportation helped to develop the Great Lakes region for industry.
Coal, nickel, and iron.
What are the 4 types of industries?
Heavy industry, goods processing industry, high-tech industry, consumer goods industry.
