Genres of Determinate Space
- These genres (Westerns, gangster movies, etc.) take place in specific locales.
- They involve a conflict over control of that space.
- Generally a strong, INDIVIDUAL hero, enters the space, acts to resolve some conflict over control of that space, and then leaves.
- Genres of determinate space uphold the values of SOCIAL ORDER.
Genres of Indeterminate Space
These genres (musicals, screwball comedies) do not occur in particular locales or settings.
- The conflict is not over control of the space.
- The conflict involves not an individual, but a “doubled” hero, a romantic couple.
- They seek to bring their values in line with those of one another OR with those of society.
