Genotypes and phenotypes Flashcards
what is a genotype
the double set of genetic instructions make up an organism’s genotype
what is a phenotype
the expression of physical, biochemical and physiological characteristics visible
what is complete dominance
genes are dominant and recessive, the dominant allele will mask/hide the recessive allele
what is codominance
when the heterozygote eexpresses the traits associated with both alleles, neither masks the other, both are expressed in the phenotype
what is incomplete dominance
when neither allele is dominant and combine to form a new phenotype - intermediate phenotype
how are the alleles of incomplete and codominance written
letters written in capital letters and different letters written in superscript
what are sex linked genes
genes carried on the y or x chromosomes
how are y or x genes written
y or x and lowercase or uppercase letters written above in superscript
