Genomes and characteristics Flashcards
What is the genome of an organism?
It’s the entire genetic material of an organism
In plants and animals, where is genetic material stored and what is it arranged into?
It is stored in the nucleus and is arranged into chromosomes
Chromosomes come in pairs. So how many pairs do humans have?
23 pairs (46 chromosomes in total)
What is a chromosome?
One very long molecule of DNA that’s coiled up
DNA is a natural what?
A natural polymer that’s made up of smaller, repeating units called monomers.
What are the monomers that make up DNA called?
Nucleotides
Each DNA molecules contains two what?
Two strands of nucleotides
What do the two strands of nucleotides coil up together to form?
A double helix
What is a gene?
A short length of DNA on a chromosome
What does each gene code for?
Each gene codes for a particular sequence
