Genome Wide Variation Flashcards

1
Q

What are snp

A

Single nucleotide polymorphisms is a variation at a single position in a DNA sequence.
They occur around every 1000 nucleotides meaning there are around 4-5 million in a human genome.
They usually don’t have any effect on health or development but can be used as markers to locate genes and predict responses to drugs/toxins

Q

What is pharmocogenomics and personalised medicine

A

Study of how individuals genetic makeup influences their response to drugs through whole genome genotyping which allows them to create personalised medicine (medicine tailored made for an individuals genotype)

Q

How genotyping can identify if HIV carriers will have serious side effects to abacavir

A

They analyse the presence of HLA-B57:01 allele which increases the hypersensitivity to abacavir using microarrays based genotyping
