genitive of possession
Use of the genitive to show possession or ownership.
genitive absolute
A suspended participial clause which is comprised of a circumstantial participle in the genitive and a related substantival element which agrees in case. As the absolute nature of genitive absolutes has come under question in recent scholarship, this annotation is applied less frequently in the LSGNT than it otherwise might be.
genitive of appelation
A word in the genitive which is used as a title or term of address for a noun, usually proper, that is similarly in the genitive.
genitive of association
Use of the genitive to express an impersonal relationship between two sentential elements or ideas.
attributive genitive
Use of the genitive to express a characteristic of the modified substantive.
comparative genitive
Use of the genitive in forming a comparison between two elements.
genitive of content
Use of a genitive to express the substance or content of another substantive.
descriptive genitive
This is a superset of several uses of the genitive. Where a genitive is not seen as fitting neatly into one of the subset categories, the superset is used as a default term.
genitive object
Use of a genitive to express the object, or complement, of a verb.
objective genitive
Use of a substantive in the genitive relative to another substantive in order to express the object of the verbal idea implicit in the other substantive, or nomen regens.
partitive genitive
Use of the genitive to express the larger part of which the modified substantive, or nomen regens, is a part.
genitive of price
Use of the genitive to express the price or value of something.
qualitative genitive
Use of the genitive to express a quality or internal characteristic of the main substantive.
genitive of respect
A word in the genitive that is used to express respect.
genitive of reference
Use of the genitive to express the reference or regard in which the author views the modified word.
