what is HSV-1?
A
usual cause of oral herpes and now the most common cause of genital herpes in the UK

what is HSV-2?
A
historically the most common cause of genital herpes in the UK, more likely to cause recurrent anogenital symptoms

what are the features of HSV1/2 -infection?
A
- may be asymptomatic
- multiple painful genital ulcers
- dysuria
- vaginal or urethral discharge
- systemic symptoms - fever, malaise, headache, urinary retention
- recurrent episodes are usually less severe than a primary episode
- prodromal phase = tingling

what are the typical features of genital herpes lesion?
A
- painful ulcers
- crust and heal - virus ceases to be shed from the lesions

how is genital herpes diagnosed?
A
- clinically from history and examination
- swab from ulcer and analysed using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATS)

how is HSV transmitted?
A
skin-to-skin
patients should abstain from sex during clinical recurrence or when they are experiencing prodromal symptoms

what is the management of HSV?
A
- aciclovir 400mg TD for 5 days
- valaciclovir 500mg BD for 5 days
- aciclovir 200mg five times daily for 5 days
- famciclovir 250mg TD for 5 days

A
nucleic acid amplification test
