what are the genva conventions?
definition
it was developed to protect wounded soldiers and medical personnel during war. has been signed over by 190 countries and still apply to modern conflicts
what are the 4 Geneva conventions?
- protects wounded and sick soldiers and medical personnel
- protects shipwrecked soldiers at sea
- protects prisoners of war
- protects civilians and thier property during times of conflict
who do the genva conventions protect?
• Innocent people who are not fighting in the war
•prisoners of war.
• Civilians, their homes, and their possessions.
• Those who are trying to help others
• Those who are being held in jails
• People from being used as human shields or being forced to move.
• farms, hospitals,transportation
• Women and children from being hurt or abused by soldiers.
what happens if you violate the Genva conventions?
considered war crimes and can result in legal consequences and punishments
e. g isreal and Palestine, Both sides have been accused of targeting civilians and using disappropriate force against civilians
what are reasons for the geneva conventions?
•protects innocent lives during war
•provides guidelines for how soldiers and military should treat those who aren’t taking part
•helps ensure humans are being treated with respect and wounded and sick is given help
•makes sure illegal acts dont go un punished
•prohibits torture and cruel treatment
what are reasons against the Geneva conventions?
•recent wars like syria an ukraine show it has not been effective
•they are too restrictive
•violations often go un punished and threat of legal punishment is not enough
•some non state actors dont recognize the conventions for example when russia payed a military force to fight on its behalf
•dont address emerging issues like cyber attacks or use of newer weapons making them outdated.
