Genetis & Herediy Flashcards
What does the cell theory state?
It states that all living organisms have basic unit of structure and function, which is the cell.
What is a cell membrane and what is it’s function?
It is a thin semi-permeable membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosing it’s contents. It’s function is to protect the integrity of the interior of the cell by allowing certain substances into the cell, while keeping other substances out. It also serves as a base of attachment for the cytoskeleton in some organisms and the cell wall in others. Thus the cell membrane also serves to help support the cell and maintain it’s shape.
What is a cell nucleus and what is it’s function?
It is a membrane bound structure hat contains the cell’s hereditary information and controls the cell’s growth and reproduction. It is the command center of a eukaryotic cell and is commonly the most prominent organelle in a cell.
What is a cell wall and what is it’s function?
It is a rigid, semi-permeable protective layer in some cell types. This outer covering is positioned next to the cell membrane (plasma membrane) in most plant cells, fungi, bacteria, algae, and some archaea. Animals cells however do not have it. It conducts many important functions in a cell including protection, structure, and support
