Genetics Study flashcards
Genetics
The scientific study of heredity
Heredity
Passing of traits from parents to offspring
Traits
observable characteristics (EX: Eye color)
Offspring
A person’s child or children
Gregor Mendel
Experimented with pea plants to observe how genetics work.
1822-1884
Purebred
The product of many generations with same trait
Fertilization
Egg and sperm join, combine DNA
Alleles
2 forms of a trait
Dominant
traits are always physically expressed when you inherit 1.
(BB) (Bb)
Recessive
Often dominated, only expressed when paired with another recessive (bb)
Phenotype
The physical expression or appearance.
Genotype
The type of genes/alleles inherited
Homozygous
Inherit 2 of the same alleles
Heterozygous
1 of each allele
Codominance
2 different dominat alleles match up, both get equally expressed
Punnet Square
Tool used to determine possible phenotypes/genotypes of offspring.
(XX) (XY)
- 23rd chromosone
- sex chromosone
XX
Female
XY
Male
Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA)
Chemical instructions for all living organisms
-discovered in 1869
James Watson + Francis Crick
“Discovered” the structure/shape (twisted ladder) of DNA in 1953
Rosalind Franklin
Discovered the shape of DNA, work was “borrowed” from Watson+Crick
