Genetics & Personality Flashcards
Basic concepts of genetics Methods investigating contribution to personality
Phenotypic Variance:
Observed individual differences (height, eye colour, or traits measured in Big Five)
Genotypic Varience:
Individual differences in total collection of genes in each person (unobserved)
Heritability:
Proportion of observed varience in a group that is accounted for by genetic variation.
Methods of investigation:
- Selective breeding
- Family studies
- Twin studies
- Adoption studies
- Molecular genetics
Genotype-environment correlation:
Environment experienced by an individual may not be random but related to their genes
Genotype-environment interaction:
Same environment, different responses because of different genotypes (collection of genes)
E.g. Effects of study environment
Environmental modulation of gene expression:
Aspects of the environment affecting the expression of genes, leading to the creation of different kinds of proteins, ultimately leading to different functions.
