Genetics Lecture 10 - Cytogenetics 2 Flashcards
Do aquired genetic changes (such as in cancer) affect phenotype?
No
In which cells do aquired changes reflect an altered karyotype?
In the cancer cells only (eg. bone marrow only).
What are metacentric chromosomes?
Centromere divides the chromosome in half
What are submetacentric chromosomes?
q and p arms
What are acrocentric chromosomes?
Nub p arm
What is a Robertsonian translocation?
Loss of the p arm of an acrosentric chromosome and fusion with another acrocentric chromosome. The centromeres of the chromosomes split and they fuse.
What does (q10) represent?
A Robertsonian translocation.
What does this mean: 45, XY, der(15;22) (q10;q10)?
Male with Robertsonian translocation between chromosomes 15 and 22.
Do people with Robertsonian translocations have phenotypic effects?
No
When people with Robertsonian translocations try to have children, can that be problematic?
Yes, in meiosis many cells will end up with too many chromosomal info or with no chromosomes at all.
If a translocation occurs between a X chromosome and an autosomal chromosome, which chromosome will be inactivated?
The normal x (to save the autosomal genes)
In isochromosome q of the X chromosome, which chromosome will be inactivated?
The abnormal isochromosome X
Can you have changes in copy number of virtually any chromosome in acquired changes?
Yes
Which are the acrocentric chromosomes?
13, 14, 15, 21, 22
