Genetics and Mutations Flashcards
What is DNA?
DNA is genetic information for an organism. It is passed from parents to offspring
Where is DNA in a cell?
cell nucleus
What is the structure of DNA?
double helix
Describe the relationship between chromosomes, DNA and genes.
What is a nucleotide?
Nucleotides are joined together by their sugar phosphate groups.
What are the 4 bases in DNA? What base pairs with what?
Adenine (A)
Thymine (T)
Guanine (G)
Cytosine (C)
A pairs with T
C pairs with G
What bonds hold together the bases in DNA?
hydrogen bonds
What is RNA?
RNA uses ribose sugar instead of deoxyribose, RNA also has four bases, but instead of Thymine (T) it has Uracil (U). So, A pairs with U, and G still pairs with C.
Describe how DNA and RNA are similar and how they differ.
What is protein synthesis?
What are the 2 steps of protein synthesis?
Describe each step of protein synthesis.
What is involved?
Where does this occur in the cell?
What is mRNA? How is mRNA paired with DNA? What are the bases?
What is the role of the ribosome?
What is a codon?
