Genetics Flashcards
What is a gene?
Section of DNA that codes for a particular trait or characteristics.
What is an allele?
A different form of a gene that codes for a different version of a characteristic.
What is a genotype?
A description of the pair of alleles present for a characteristic.
What is a phenotype?
The physical expression of the alleles
What is variation?
A change or slight difference in condition, amount, or level, typically within certain limits.
What is a chromosome?
A threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
What is a homozygous
Pair of alleles that produce a characteristic are the same
What is a heterzygous
Pair of alleles that produce a characteristic are different
Dominant
An allele that will ALWAYS be expressed even when there is only one of these alleles present, represented by a capital letter
Recessive
An allele that will only be expressed when both alleles are of this type
