Genetics Flashcards
Progeny Testing
The evaluation of the performance of a bulls offspring compared to other bulls offspring under similar feed and housing conditions
F1 Hybrid
Both parents plants are purebred and homozygous for most traits. The parent plants are crossed by hand pollination. The produces a seed that are hybrids of both parent plants
Artificial selection
A process by which humans breed plants and animals to ensure certain desirable traits
Performance Testing
The evaluation of a bulls performance by comparing its weight gain and food conversion ratio with other bulls kept under similar feed and housing conditions
GMOs
Plants and animals produced by genetic engineering
Heterosis/ Hybrid Vigour
The increased productivity displayed by offspring form genetically different parents
Back Cross
The mating of a hybrid with a purebred recessive parent
Continuous Variation
When a characteristic is controlled by a number of genes interacting with each other to give a range of phenotype a rather than two distinct groups
Cross Breeding
The mating of animals or plants from two different breeds, varieties or species
Inbreeding
The mating of closely related animals which increases the chances of the offspring being affected by undesirable recessive traits
