Genetics Flashcards
Genetics
Transmission of characteristics from one generation to the next.
DNA
Contains the biological instructions that make each species unique. DNA is passed from adult organisms to their offspring during reproduction.
Gene
Basic physical and functional unit of heredity. Genes act as instructions to make molecules called proteins.
Chromosome
Thread like structures inside the nucleus. Each chromosome is made of protein and a single molecule of DNA.
Genome
Complete set of DNA, including all of its genes. Each genome contains all of the info needed to build and maintain that organism.
Allele
Different forms of the same traits.
Characteristics
A feature such as eye colour or wing shape.
Trait
A variation of a characteristic, such as brown or long wing shape vs round wing shape. Not all are visible.
Heritable
Are characteristics that are passed from parent to offspring.
Non-Heritable
Characteristics that cannot be passed on to other generations.
Discrete/Continuous
Traits that have a defined form. Like a particular species of plants may produce white or purple.
