Genetics Flashcards
Gene
-Section of a DNA that codes for a specific polypeptide.
- Sequence of a nucleotide based in the DNA determines the sequence of amino acids in the proteins primary structure
Genotype
The genetic constitution of an organism. All the alleles that an organism possesses
Gene pool
All the alleles within an interbreeding population
Population
All the individuals of the same species that occupy the same area at the same time
Phenotype
The expression of the genetic constitution and its interaction with the environment
Allele
Different version of the same gene
Might be recessive, dominant or codominant
Locus
The position where different alleles of the same gene are found
Homozygous
Two copies of the a gene are the same allele
Heterogeneous
If two copies of a gene are different alleles
Dominant allele
If an allele is dominant it will always be expressed in the phenotype
Recessive allele
If an allele is recessive it will only be expressed in the phenotype if the if the genotype is homozygous
Codominant allele
Equally expressed wishing the phenotype
Genetic crosses
Diagrams which show the way in which alleles are passed from one generation to the next.An allele is represented by a letter
