What is the process where embryos are screened in IVF?
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis
What is CVS and when is it carried out ?
Chorionic villus sampling 11-14 weeks
- sample of embryonic tissue is taken from placenta and DNA is analysed
What is amniocentesis and when is this carried out?
15-20 weeks
- Sample of amniotic fluid containing foetal cells is obtained using a needle, thenDBA is analysed
What are some ethical/social issues surrounding genetic testing?
- risk of harm to foetus or miscarriage
- outcome of testing might lead to abortion
- cost of bringing up baby with a genetic disorder
- emotional and mental issues around carrying a baby with a genetic disorder
What are pros and cons of CVS?
+ can be carried out earlier, allowing more time to make a decision and prepare
– higher risk of miscarriage than amniocentesis
What are pros and cons of amniocentesis?
+ lower risk of miscarriage
– carried out later in pregnancy, have to wait for foetal cells to develop
