Genetic Modified Food Flashcards
Genetically Modified Food
1) Involves the insertion of DNA from one organism into another
2) OR Modification of an organism’s DNA in order to achieve a desired trait
Selective breeding vs GM
1) Selective Breeding
- Slow
- Imprecise
- Modification of genes that are NATURALLY occur in the organism
2) GM
- Very fast
- Precise
- Can introduce genes into an organism that would not naturally occur
Genetic Modified Organism
1) An organism whose genetic material has been altered by mean of genetic engineering
2) The direct manipulation of an organism’s genome using biotechnology
Type of genetic manipulation
1) Transgenic
2) Cisgenic/Intragenic
3) Subgenic
Transgenic
a gene is moved from one non-closely related species to another
Cisgenic/intragenic
a gene is moved within the same species or a closely related species.
Subgenic
a gene is edited to amplify, delete, insert, silence, or repress the gene.
Benefits of GMO
1) Can save money & promote higher profits
2) Longer shelf life = Less waste
3) Improved nutrients
4) Improved resistance to disease or illness
4) New products
Controversies
1) Safety is the major issue = Might pose health risk
2) Effect on ecosystems
