Genetic Inheritance Flashcards
What is genetic inheritance?
Genetic inheritance is a basic principle of genetics and explains how characteristics are passed from one generation to the next.
Which part of PIES is genetic inheritance?
Physical
What can you genetically inherit?
Physical characteristics and genetic conditions/diseases/disorders
What can inherited physical characteristics effect and why?
Characteristics can affect social and emotional wellbeing because they can influence a person’s self concept.
What are some examples of genetic conditions/diseases/disorders?
Huntington's disease Cystic fibrosis Sickle cell anaemia Neurofibromatosis (NF1) Alzheimer's disease Downs syndrome
Why are conditions inherited?
Faulty alleles are passed from one parent (if dominant) or both parents (if recessive).
OR
Whole chromosome abnormalities e.g. when a child inherits an extra chromosome.
What are some examples of characteristics you can inherit?
Eye colour, hair colour, height, hair type
What is predisposition?
It is an increased likelihood of developing a particular disease based on a person’s genetic makeup.
What are the effects of inherited disorders?
Physical health - body systems, growth and mobility.
Intellectual wellbeing - learning, thinking, problem solving and decision making.
Emotional wellbeing - how people feel about themselves.
Social wellbeing - the ability to build relationships.
What are the different types of allele?
Dominant and recessive
What is a dominant gene?
Need 2 copies of this allele to express the characteristic
What is a recessive gene?
Only need 1 of these allele to express the characteristic
