Genetic information - CLASSIFICATION Flashcards
What is the biological definition of a species?
A group with similar features that are capable of breeding to produce living, fertile offspring
What is sexual dimorphism?
When the male and female of the same species look different
What is the order of the biological hierarchy? (Least specific to most specific)
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
What is meant by a hierarchical classification?
Larger groups containing smaller groups
Describe one way by which different species can be distinguished
Do not interbreed to produce fertile offspring
Suggest two other sources of evidence which scientists can use to classify animals in different genera
- Fossil record
- Phylogeny
- Biochemical differences
- Homologous features
What is meant by a hierarchy?
A classification of organisms in different levels, with no overlap
How does a phylogenetic system differ from a simple hierarchy?
Phylogenetic systems are based on evolution, and they show the points of separation//Simple hierarchies do not show this
Give two ways in which courtship increases the probability of successful mating
- Form a pair bond
- Attracts same species
- Stimulates release of gametes
What is meant by genetic diversity?
The number of different alleles of genes in a population
How many kingdoms are there in a classic system?
5
What are the domains?
Bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes
