Genetic factors Flashcards
Genetics is all about…
gene inheritance that lead to a disorder or trait being passed on
Coccaro found
50% of aggression is genetic
Its more than one gene at work. One protein linked with aggression is the…
Monamine Oxidase A (MAOA)
MAOA regulates..
serotonin
low levels of serotonin leads to…
impulsive aggressive behaviour
Those that have a low MAOA have the…
warrior gene
Who studied a criminal violent family, and found all the males had low MAOA
Brunner
This gene has evolved because…
men needed to hunt, and that would’ve needed for them to be aggressive
Low MAOA doesn’t always cause violent criminal behaviour, but those who have it are…
more at risk
AO3 points for genetic factors
Hutchings and Mednick & Tiihonen
Hutchings and Mednick studied who?
14,000 Finnish adoptees
Hutchings and Mednick found that…
adopted boys with criminal convictions had biological fathers with criminal convictions
Hutchings and Mednick: What percentage of children, whose biological father committed a crime, also committed a crime?
21%
Hutchings and Mednick: What percentage of children, whose neither father committed a crime, committed a crime?
10%
Discussion for Hutchings and Mednick
Miles and Carey meta analysis
What did Miles and Carey find?
genetics could account for 50% of aggression. They also found that environment contributed more in youth , whereas genes played a bigger role later in life.
Who did Tiihonen study?
Finnish prisoners
What did Tiihonen find?
If Low MAOA is found with CDH13 gene, it results in the most violent inmates
Discussion for Tiihonen
Its hard to determine the role of genetic factors. There are possible environmental influences. More than one gene might contribute. Its hard to definitively predict behaviour from genes.
AO3+ point
Reductionist
Reductionist study…
Caspi
Caspi found that those with low MAOA are likely to grow up to exhibit anti-social behaviour, only if…
they have been mistreated.
