Genetic engineering Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic engineering?
A
Genetic engineering involves the transfer of genes from one species of organism into another. The genes then function in the new organism to produce a substance useful to man.
2
Q
What are the stages of genetic engineering?
A
- Chromosome extracted and required gene identified and cut out using enzymes
- Plasmid extracted and cut open using enzymes
- Gene inserted into plasmid using enzymes and inserted into bacterial “host” cell
- Bacterium grows and multiplies
- Product mass-produced by duplicates of plasmid
3
Q
What are two key hormone products of genetic engineering?
A
- Insulin
- Human Growth Hormone (HGH)
4
Q
What are two advantages of genetic engineering?
A
- Make large quantities of product
- Wide range of substances
5
Q
What are two disadvantages of genetic engineering?
A
- Expensive (cost of development)
- Harmful to ecosystem
