Genetic Engineering Flashcards
What is genetic engineering?
It is the process of using rDNA technology to alter the genetic makeup of an organism.
It involves the direct manipulation of one or more genes. Most often, a gene from another species is added to an organism’s genome to give it a desired phenotype.
What do you call the resulting organism of genetic engineering?
GMO or genetically modified organism
Five basic processes of Genetic Engineering
- DNA extraction
- Gene Cloning
- Gene Design
- Transformation
- Backcross Breeding
This a method of biological research in which fragments of tissue from an animal or plant are transferred to an artificial environment in which they can continue to survive and function.
Tissue Culture
This is a useful tool for plant transformation because it can carry, transfer, and integrate
Gene of interest into the plant genome.
