Genetic Diversity Flashcards
Genetic diversity
The number of different alleles of genes in a population
Genetic diversity is a factor enabling what to occur
Natural selection
Natural selection principles
Random mutation can result in new alleles in a gene
Many mutations are harmful.but in some cases it may be a benefit
Something happens and it survives
Therefore it can reproduce
The advantageous allele is inherited by members of the next generation
The new allele then increases in frequency in the population
Directional selection
Selection may favour individuals that vary in one direction from the mean of the population
Example of directional selection,?
Antibiotic resistance in bacteria
Random mutation in bacteria enabled it to make a new protein. This protein was an enzyme able to break down the antibiotic penicillin before it was able to kill the bacteria
Stabilising selection
Selection may favour average individuals
Example of stabilising selection
Human birth weights
Natural selection results in
Species that are better adapted to their environment Anatomical Physiological Behavioural Adaptations
