Sickle cell anemia
Cause: Homozygous recessive results in disease. One gene gives some symptoms.
Effects: RBC’s are curved or oddly shaped and don’t carry oxygen. RBC’s clog capillaries. Causes pain and organ failure.
Cystic Fibrosis
Cause: A mutation where three base pairs were removed. Is recessive and inherited.
Effects: Thick mucus in lungs and intestines which causes infections, can shorten life.
Hemophilia
Cause: A recessive gene that is on the X chromosome, sex linked.
Effects: Blood doesn’t clot properly. Mostly in males and can be fatal.
Down Syndrome
Cause: Chromosomes don’t separate properly in meiosis and can’t be inherited.
Effects: Results in some degree of mental retardation and maybe heart problems. There are distinct facial features
