Genetic Complementations Flashcards
Purpose of genetic complementation??
We use it to determine whether 2 recessive mutations are in the same gene or in different genes.
Also to provides information on the number of different genes that can produce the mutant phenotype.
Genetic heterogeneity?
When a mutant phenotype is caused by mutations in more than one gene.
complementation group meaning?
Mutations in the same gene are part of the same complementation group, while mutations in different genes are in different complementation groups.
Mutations of the different genes are?
Any given pair of mutants that complement one another by producing wild type progeny are mutations of different genes
Mutations of the same gene are?
The cross of mutant parents produces only the mutant phenotype in progeny when the mutations fail to complement one another and are mutations of the same gene!
Variable expressivity meaning?
The same genotype produces phenotype a that vary in the degree or magnitude of expression of the allele of interest!
Basically how many symptoms came with that disease for each one who expressed the train! 1, 2, 3, or more!
Complementary gene interaction meaning and ratio?
9:7 ratio
Occurs when genes must act in tandem to produce a phenotype. Wild type action from both genes is required to produce the wild type phenotype type.mutation of one or both genes produce a mutant phenotype.
Duplicate gene interactions meaning and ratio??
15:1 ratio
Duplicate gene interaction allows dominant alleles of either duplicate gene to produce the wild type phenotype. Only organisms with homozygous mutations of both genes have a mutant phenotype.
Dominant gene interaction ratio and meaning ??
9:6:1 ratio
Dominant gene interaction occurs between genes that each contribute to a phenotype producing one! One phenotype if dominant alleles are present at each, a 2nd phenotype if recessive alleles are homozygous for either gene, and 3rd phenotype if recessive homozygous occurs at both genes.
Recessive epistasis ratio and meaning??
9:3:4 ratio
Recessive epistasis occurs when recessive alleles at one gene mask or reduce the expression of alleles at the interacting locus.
Dominant epistasis ratio and meaning?
12:3:1 ratio
Occurs when a dominant alleles of one gene masks or reduces the expression of alleles of a second gene.
Dominant suppression ratio and meaning?
13:3 ratio
Occurs when the dominant alleles of one gene suppresses the expression of a dominant allele of a second gene.
Pleiotropy meaning
The alteration of multiple distinct traits of an organism by a mutation in a single gene.
Fruit flies female genotype is ?
For males genotype it’s?
XXY
Which states that fruit flys with 2 X chromosomes are females regardless if they have a Y chromosome on it.
Males = which states that males will Carry a single X chromosome and no Y chromosome regardless if they carry a Y chromosome or not, it’s still make if it’s single X chromosome.
X0
Does Y0 progeny fail to develop?
Is XXX for fruit flys lethal?
Yes becuz their is no X chromosome and only a Y chromosome present.
XXX for fruit flys is lethal
