Genetic Code and Transcription Flashcards
What are the features of the genetic code?
Unambigious (codon to one amino acid), degenerate (one amino acid to multiple codons), commaless, nonoverlapping, nearly universal
Describe the wobble hypothesis
Codon anticodon bonding at third position is less constrained
What is involved in prokaryotic transcription?
RNA polymerase, DNA template, promoter, sigma subunit that recognizes promoter, consensus sequences within promoter at -35 and -10, +1 transcription start site
What are some features of prokaryotic transcription
Hairpin formation terminates transcription, transcription coupled to translation, polycistrionic mrna
What is required for eukaryotic transcription?
RNA polymerase II, core promoter elements including the TATA box, which is analogous to the -10 sigma region in prokaryotes, general transcription factors, enhancers
What are some features of eukaryotic transcription
occurs in nucleus, not coupled to translation, requires chromatin remodeling, introns spliced, postranscriptional proccessing
