Genesis of Sin Flashcards
The origin of Sin
- Reformed Christians look to scripture for origin of sin and the entrance of Evil
- Genesis 2 + 3 are our key texts. With Romans 5 providing commentary on Genesis 2 +3
- As our federal head sin entered the world through Adam.
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people because all sinned
- Paul in Romans 5
- Established both the origin of sin and Adam as our federal head
- Asserts the fall resulted in both Sin and Death
And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
- God Genesis 2
- Establishes the probation of Adam. if he succeeds eternal life. Failure results in death.
- Infers that Adam was both capable of obeying and capable of rebelling
The Fall
- recorded in Gen 3
- As a result of Mans rebellion all parties involved are cursed; Adam, Eve, and the serpent
- It must be noted that Adam’s rebellion also cursed the creation “Cursed is the ground because of you.”
Moral and Penal effects of the fall
- The fall resulted in a duplex Malum (double evil)
- Sin, which summarizes the moral effects. And Death which is the result of the penal effects.
- The good news of the Gospel is that Christ is the solution to both.
Zacharius Ursinus
- German Theologian and reformer
- Author of “Sum of the Christian religion”
- Assert the Fall resulted in a Duplex Malum (double evil) of guilt and corruption. And through Christ, a double grace (duplex gratia) is offered righteousness and regeneration.
Amandus Polanus
- German theologian and reformer
- Author of “The Substance of the Christian religion”
- Similar to Ursinus asserts the fall resulted in a Duplex Malum, Original guilt and original naughtiness
reatus originalis
pravitas originalis
- Reatus, original guilt. Pravitas original naughtiness
- Asserted by Amandus Polanus
- Reatus is a natural fault (cupla) that deserves death because of the fall. Pravitas is depravity and corruption of mans nature.
Reatus Pravitas Culpa Poenam Depravatio Corruptio
Guilt Naughtiness Fault Punishment Depravity Corruption
The condition wherein man was created was morally good and upright; the state wherein he was placed, outwardly happy and blessed; the law given unto him, just and equal; the reward proposed unto him, glorious and sure; and his defection from this condition, voluntary . . . The execution of a righteous sentence, upon the voluntary transgression of a law just and equal, hath no unrighteousness in it. And this was the sum of what God did in this matter, as to the misery that came on
mankind
- Quote by John Owen, from Exposition of Hebrews
- Asserts Death is the just sentence for Adams voluntary rebellion. And this extended to all of mankind.
- Summation of Gen 2, 3, and Romans 5
Two solutions, one problem
- Someone morally pure can fulfill our debt
- We can “try” to overcome our guilt by our deeds, but we can’t account for our corruption
- The one under the curse cant remove the curse, we need a qualified substitute. Someone not affected by the fall.
No one can pay [recompense] except God, and no one ought to pay except man: it is necessary that a God-Man should pay it . . . In order, therefore, that a God-Man should bring about what is necessary, it is essential that the same one person who will make the recompense should be perfect God and perfect man. For he cannot do this if he is not true God, and he has no obligation to do so if he is not a true man
- Anslem in “Cur Deus Homo”
- No one can pay God except God. Therefore it is necessary for a God-Man to pay it.
- Uses Penal Substitutionary atonement language
The active obedience of Christ.
-Answers the problem of our moral corruption.
-Christ does this by fulfilling the demands of the law and imputing that righteousness to us.
-
The passive obedience of Christ
-Answers our penal Crisis
-Christ does this by dying on the cross on our behalf (penal substitutionary atonement.

- Princeton Seminary professor and founder of WTS
- Author of “Redemption Accomplished and Applied”
- Asserts Christ Active and Passive obedience satisfies our Two fold problem of sin and corruption
