Genes study: Caspi (et al) Flashcards
1
Q
What was the aim of this study?
A
To investigate the role that gene mutation and epigenetics, that may play a role in major depressive disorder
2
Q
What was the procedure of this study?
A
- 847 New Zealand 26-year olds
- Divided into 3 groups:
- Group 1: had two short alleles
- Group 2: had one short and one long allele
- Group 3: had two long alleles
- The mutation of the 5-HTT allele has shorter alleles
- Participants had to fill in a ‘stressful life’ questionnaire
- Also assessed for depression
3
Q
What were the findings from this study?
A
People who had inhertied one or more short versions of the allele demonstrated more symptoms of depression/suicidal thoughts in response to stressful life events
4
Q
What was the conclusion?
A
- Inheriting the gene is not enough to lead to depression
- The genes interaction with stressful life events increases the likelihood of developing depression
