• 847 New Zealand 26-year olds
• Divided into 3 groups:
• Group 1: had two short alleles
• Group 2: had one short and one long allele
• Group 3: had two long alleles
• The mutation of the 5-HTT allele has shorter alleles
• Participants had to fill in a ‘stressful life’ questionnaire
• Also assessed for depression

What were the findings from this study?

People who had inhertied one or more short versions of the allele demonstrated more symptoms of depression/suicidal thoughts in response to stressful life events

• Inheriting the gene is not enough to lead to depression
