What are the roles of genes in behavior?
Natural selection can act on behavior if there is variation among individuals, individual differences are heritable, and some behavioral differences lead to greater reproductive success for individuals performing certain behaviors.
What happens if genes are involved in behavior?
Individuals with the same combination of alleles should express the same behavioral trait, and the behavioral trait should respond to selection, leading to increased fitness and trait spread.
What is the role of the environment in trait development?
The development of traits is caused by a complex interaction between genes and the environment. Genetically identical individuals reared in different environments may end up morphologically and behaviorally different.
What is phenotypic plasticity?
Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of a given genotype to produce distinct phenotypes under different environmental conditions. It can be mediated through hormones and learning.
