Genes and inheritance Flashcards
What is DNA
DNA is a molecule found in the nucleus of cells that holds genetic information of a organism
What are chromosomes
Chromosones are structures that are made of DNA.
How is a gemete formed
when chromosomes duplicate then get divided up into gametes
What are gametes
Gametes are sex cells . They fuse together in fertilisation as part of sexual reproduction.
What are genes
Genes are lengths of DNA on chromosomes that code for specific proteins.
What are Alleles
Alleles are different versions of the same gene. Individuals will inherit an allele for each gene from their mother and their father.
What are the two types of Alleles
Recessive
Dominant
How many pairs of chromozones do human body cells have
23 pairs of chromozones
Describe the genetic difference between male and female
Males have an X and a Y chromosome.
Females have two X chromosomes.
How is there a 50% chance of having a boy or a girl
In males, when sperm are made in meiosis, the X and the Y chromosomes get separated into different gametes. This means there is a 50% chance that a sperm has an X chromosome and and 50% chance that a sperm has a Y chromosome.
Why dont offspring look exactly like one of their parents
The offspring inherit genes from both of their parents
