Genes Flashcards
Chromosome
a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes.
Allele
a variant form of a given gene.
Mutation
the alteration of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism, virus, or extrachromosomal DNA.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule composed of two chains that coil around each other to form a double helix carrying the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning, and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses.
Genetic modification
the direct manipulation of an organism’s genes using biotechnology.
Dominant allele
The allele that, if present, will always show
Recessive allele
The allele that only shows if its paired allele is identical
