Genes Flashcards

1
Q

Mrs. Rodriguez had found out that she was pregnant and was concerned about the health of her baby. Mrs. Rodriguez went on to have a normal pregnancy without complications. During Mrs. Rodriguez’s treatment in the hospital, she discovered that her blood is type O. During one of her regular visits to her doctor, Mrs. Rodriguez asked what type of blood her baby will be have, given that her husband;s blood type is A. Her doctor explained that she would need to know more about the blood type of Mr Rodriguez’s parents.

Q

Describe the difference between genotype and phenotype. What are the phenotypes and geno types of Mr and Mrs Rodriguez?

A

a person’s genotype is a description of the alleles that they carry. Phenotype refers to the way that those genes are expressed and show up as traits in the body. Mrs Rodriguez’s genotype is ii and her phenotype is O. Mr Rodriguez’s genotype is either IAIA or IAi. Either one of these genotypes would result in his phenotype, which is represented by his A blood type.

Q

Describe the type of inheritance that is represented by blood type.

A

Blood type is determined by multiple-allele inheritance. Three alleles(IA, IB, i) represent the three different blood types (A, B, O). The alleles for A and B blood type are codominant, which means that they are both expressed when combined together. The result of this combination would be the AB blood type. The allele for O blood type is recessive to both the A and B blood type alleles.

Q

Mr Rodriguez’s mother has O blood type and his father has A blood type. Explain how this information helps you understand Mr Rodriguez’s genotype.

A

Mr. Rodriguez’s genotype can be either IAIA or IA. We know that Mr Rodriguez’s mother had O blood type, and that means that she carries two copies of the O blood type allele (ii). She must have passed on one of these alleles to Mr Rodriguez. This means that Mr Rodriguez’s father must have passed on the allele for the A blood type.Mr Rodriguez’s genotype must be IAi.

Q

What is the probability that Mrs Rodriguez’s baby will have O blood type? A? B? AB?

A

we know that Mrs rodriguez’s genotype is ii and Mr Rodriguez’s genotype is IAi. The results of a Punnet square reveal that there is a 50% chance that Mrs Rodriguez’s baby will have the O blood type and a 50% chance that the baby will have the A blood type. The B and AB blood type require that one of the parents is carrying the B allele (IB). Neither Mr Rodriguez nor Mrs Rodriguez carries this allele, so there should be a 0% chance of the baby having the B or AB blood type.
