Generators and Motors Flashcards
What is the scientific name given to a spring or coil
A Solenoid
What are the two different kinds of generator and what is the main difference in their function
Alternator, dynamo. Dynamos generate direct current whereas alternators generate alternating current
What is the job or primary function of a generator
To convert kinetic energy (movement) into electrical energy.
By inserting a __________ into a _________ we can induce an electrical current.
Magnet, Solenoid
In a drawing showing magnetic field lines, the more spaced out the field lines are the ____ the force
Weaker
When current is flowing along a wire, what rule should you use to find the correct direction of the magnetic field lines
Right hand grip rule - Thumb points along direction of current, fingers give direction of field
Moving electrons produce a ______ field
Magnetic
In a solenoid are there fewer or more electrons in the same space compared to a single wire and how does this affect the magnetic field strength when a current is flowing
There are more electrons in the same space and this will make the magnetic field strength stronger
Describe the basic mechanical structure of an alternator
A coil (solenoid) inside of a “U” shaped magnet, rotating while attached to slip rings, which are rotating past brushes (usually made of carbon) which conduct the alternating current
What are slip rings replaced with in a dynamo. Describe the differences.
Commutators have a C shaped structure made up of a conductive material, however there is a break in the ring with a non conductive layer. The commutators still rotate past brushes!
Describe what each finger represents in flemings left hand rule
Thumb (pointed up) represents motion; Index finger (pointed forward) represents magnetic field direction, north to south and middle finger represents the direction of the current, and should be pointed towards your body, at right angles to the other fingers
