General Vocab Flashcards
Relative atomic mass
Big number on an element square, the relative mass of one atom, the weight.
Atomic number
The top left number for every element, equal to the number of protons in the nucleus.
Electrons
Negatively charged particles in an atom that orbit the nucleus. The number of electrons in each electron shell is given in a column on elements in the periodic table. Similar numbers give similar properties.
Ion
An atom or molecule that has a number of electrons unequal to its number of protons, creating a positive or negative charge.
Anion
A negatively charged ion.
Acid
A chemical species that donates protons or hydrogen ions and accepts electrons.
Common Compound
A substance made of two or more elements. Water, salt, alcohol
Cation
A positively charged ion.
