Imperialism
the ideas and actions that contribute to the construction and maintenance of Empire
Metropole
the name given to the center of an empire e.g. the UK/London for the empire
Informal empire
describes an area where a country has a sphere of influence but does not govern it
Formal empire
territories which are officially administered and governed by the ‘mother country’
Indigenous
the term for people who are native to a specific place/land
Administrator
the term for those from Britain who helped maintain British rule and govern in the colonies
Ethnocentric
judging a different culture solely by the values and standards of your own culture
Paramountcy
where a nation is dominant in international affairs
Free trade
when a government remove restrictions on trade
Protectionism
policies instituted by the gov to restrict trade between nations through tariffs quota’s and regulations to protect a countries own industries and economy
Colonialism
the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers and exploiting it economically
Monopoly
when an individual/business has sole control over particular goods
