General Survey Flashcards
Explore common or concerning symptoms
Including: fatigue and weakness; fever, chills, night sweats; weight changes, pain.
Classification of overweight & obesity by BMI
BMI = weight (kg)/ [height (m)]^2; OR weight (lbs)/ [height (in)]^2 x 703. Underweight = < 18.5. Normal = 18.5 to < 25 (i.e. 24.9). Overweight = 25 to <30. Obesity (class I) = 30 to <35. Obesity (II) = 35 < 40. Extreme obesity (III) = > or = 40. 1 kg = 2.2 lbs. 1 inch = 2.54 cm. 1 meter = 100 cm.
Apparent state of health
Acutely/ chronically ill, frail, or fit and robust.
Dress, grooming, personal hygiene
Appropriate clothing for temperature/ weather/ setting. Well dressed. Well groomed. Unkept/ untidy. Well groomed. Maintains personal hygiene.
Blood pressure measurement
Muffling point/ disappearance point of Korotkoff sounds right at diastolic pressure. In some ppl, muffling point & disappearance point = farther apart. Occasionally, as in aortic regurgitation, sounds never disappear. If difference = 10 mmHg or greater, record both i.e. 154/80/68. By making sounds less audible, venous congestion may produce artificially low systolic & high diastolic pressures. Pressure difference of > 10-15 mmHg occurs in SUBCLAVIAN STEAL SYNDROME, AORTIC DISSECTION.
Temperature- converting Celsius to Fahrenheit
[(0 degrees C) x 9/5] + 32 = 32 degrees F.
I.e. (10C x 9/5) + 32 = 50 F
