General statement and definitions Flashcards
General statement?
Grinding poverty and tectonic volatility make a devastating combination - guardian 2010
Define hazard?
A hazard is a geographical event such as seismic activity which has the potential to cause a disaster - www.oxforddictionaries.com
Define disaster?
According to the International Disaster Database a disaster is when 10 or more people are reported killed, 100 or more people are reported effected, a state of emergency is declared or there is a call for international aid - www.emdat.be
Define impact?
An impact is a marked effect or influence on something. This can be applied to geography and tectonic hazards through the social and economic issues faced - www.oxforddictionaries.com
Define vulnerability?
Vulnerability is the level of risk at which people are at to be effected by a hazard - www.oxforddictionaries.com
Define human factor?
Human factors include things such as quality of housing. access to medicine and levels of poverty which influence how bad an impact a disaster has - Edexcel A2 Geography textbook Digby et al 2009
Define physical factor?
Physical factors include things such as magnitude of the disaster, frequency of the disaster and climate which influence how bad an impact a disaster has - Edexcel A2 Geography textbook Digby et al 2009
Define development?
The process of change for the good, usually referring to standard of living or quality of life - Edexcel A2 Geography textbook Digby et al 2009
Source of the crunch model?
Blaikie et al 1998
What comes under the first stage of vulnerability?
Underlying causes
Poverty
Limited access to power
Limited access to resources
What comes under the second stage of vulnerability?
Unsafe conditions Dangerous location Dangerous infrastructure Fragile environment Low income
What comes under disaster?
Disaster = vulnerability + hazard
What comes under hazard?
Trigger events
Earthquake
Tsunami
Volcanic eruption
Source of the parks model?
1991
Three stages on left?
Social stability
Level of economic activity
Quality of life
Bottom 3 stages?
Relief - search, rescue, care
Rehabilitation - temporary housing, aid
Reconstruction - permanent rebuilding`
Source of technological response diagram?
Dunn et al 2010
4 stages of the technological response diagram?
Modifying the loss
Modifying the vulnerability
Modifying the event
Modifying the cause
Reason for using the crunch model?
I will use the crunch model as the framework for my analysis of tectonic hazards disastrous impacts
Reason for using the parks model?
I will use the parks model to demonstrate the varying levels of disruption and recovery times between LEDC and MEDC nations and their ability to return to normality, improve or deteriorate from original conditions
Reason for the technological response diagram?
I will use the technological response diagram to show how varying levels of technology have an impact on the ability of the countries to protect themselves from the disastrous impacts of tectonic hazards.
