What is Rule 1?
The first and most important duty of all rail personnel is to provide for the safety of Rail Personnel and the public.
Define and Explain ATSB.
All Train Stop Board. They are provided to prevent conflicting movements where shown on S and I Diagrams.
Define and Explain “Blocking”.
Blocking is the process of keeping signals and/or setting points tagged or collared to prevent a train from being signalled to enter a protected section of track.

A pilot is someone that is qualified person who ensures the safety of a rail vehicle, guiding the locomotive engineer.
Define and Explain “Signaller”.
A person who controls signals at an interlocked station.
When circumstances occur which are not provided for in rules, regulations or instructions:
Rail personnel must be guided by their own judgement bearing in mind the importance of safety in the discharge of their duty.
Rail personnel are not fit for duty if they:
- Under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Under the influence of medication or illness, mental or physical that effects Safety, Co-ordination, Alertness, Reactions, Response.
- Insufficiently rested.
- Suffer any illness that impairs vision/hearing or can lead to sudden incapacitation.
The consumption or possession of any illegal drugs or unauthorised alcohol is:
Prohibited.
Rail Personnel who are prescribed medication by their doctor, or when they purchase over the counter medicine, must:
Establish if there is any side effects that will effect the person’s Safety, Co-ordination, Alertness, Reactions, Response.
If Rail Personnel have side effects from prescribed medication, they must:
Advise their manager.
Regarding signals, when must you stop your train.
Unusual or irregular signals or hands being waved violently.
When is a signal regarded as danger.
- When a signal is absent at a place or time when it is ordinarily shown.
- Imperfectly displayed signal is exhibited.
- Exhibition of a white light is shown instead of green, yellow, red, or purple signal.
- A L/E should notify the signaller concerned should a signal appear unusual.
