General Questions Flashcards
What are MCP contractures?
A condition where the MCP joints are immobilized in extension so the collateral ligaments at the MCP joint are tight. So if the extensors are tight the patient will have a hard time with flexion. Collateral ligaments shorten in the extended position and are hard to stretch out. Creates a claw hand
What are flexion contractures
When the PIP and/or DIP joints are held in flexion. The lateral and accessory ligaments of the PIP and DIP joints will tighten and shorten in the flexion position and make it hard to extend
What do volar plates prevent
Anterior dislocation
Skiing with VALGUS stress on thumb injures what
Ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb
Virus stress would injure the radial
Where is flexor retinaculum?
Pisiform, scaphoid, trapezium, hamate
Roof of carpal tunnel
Function of flexor retinaculum
Attachment for thenar and hypothenar muscles
Prevent bowstring effect of tendons
Maintains carpal arch
What passes through Guyons canal
Ulnar artery and ulnar nerve
What problem occurs at Guyons canal
Nerve entrapment or compression
What are thenar muscles innervates by
Recurrent branch of median nerve
What are hypothenar muscles innervates by
Deep branch of ulnar nerve
What does radial artery pass thru to get to the Palm
Heads of first dorsal interossei
What extends the digits
Extensor mechanism
What makes up the extensor mechanism
Extensor digitorum ligaments
Hood which wraps around metacarpal heads and base of proximal phalanx. Turns into central slip and lateral bands
What is the hood of the extensor mechanism anchored by
Palmar ligament
What is the ORL and how does it work
ORL: oblique retinacular ligament
Is on stretch during DIP flexion and therefore pulls PIP into flexion
When PIP goes into extension, it pulls DIP into extension
PIP and DIP MOVE TOGETHER BC OF THIS LIGAMENT
