What needs to happen for you to smell a substance.
A
The substance must be a volatile gas so it can get up into the nasal cavity and into the olfactory recess. It must be water soluble to get through the mucus layer and lipid soluble to get through the cell membrane. Then it must reach olfactory hairs and bind to receptors on the olfactory nerve.
