General Principles Of Pharmacokinetics Flashcards
What are the actions of the drug on the body? (Pharmacodynamics)
Therapeutic effects, side effects, toxic effects
What are the actions of the body on the drug? (Pharmacokinetics)
Absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion
What is the concept of bioavailability?
The fraction or percentage of the drug dose that reaches systemic circulation. Determined from area under time vs. plasma concentration curve
What are factors that determine blood levels of a drug?
Amount given, route of administration, rate and extent of absorption, distribution to tissues (sites or action and loss), rate and extent of metabolism, rate and extent of excretion
What are the routes of drug administration?
Enteral (GI tract), paraenteral (injection), topical, inhalation, intraosseous
What are types of enteral drug administration?
Oral (ingestion), sublingual, rectal suppositories
What are types of paraenteral drug administration?
Intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intrathecal, epidural
